Soon to move to Oxford UK, (buggy sites ? etc)
Any buggy pilots in the Oxford area want to let me know where the
best local spots to go are, etc.

There are not very many that I know of. I used to try to fly stick
kites on Port Meadow, but due to it being rather sheltered, it isn't all
that great. In fact, the whole of Oxford is in a bit of a dip, so the
wind is never as nice as you would like even if you could find a nice
wide open space. Despite living in Oxford, I do more flying elsewhere
than I do here. I haven't even bothered trying to buggy in Oxford. There
may well be a useful big wide open space, but I haven't found it yet.
Time to look at an OS map maybe...
Dave

OK,
Where is St. Annes beach?? Give me a rough clue as which map to look
on?
Andy

St, Annes beach is just south of Blackpool on the north west coast of
Britain. It is a regular meeting place for fiers from as far as the
Midlands, and in my opinion has got to be one of the best beaches in the
country for kite flying. Buggiers tend to meet at the front of the
yaught club. - Dave. P.S Views of the beach can be seen on the web site
below. -- Visit the Aeroplane Kite Site http://www.womack.u-net.com/daveholt/

not the best of area's, I'd surgest contacting Abingdon Airfield,
they have been known to let individuals use the old runway, but it's
still occasionally used by the RAF still. even though it's an army base
now. Forget white horse hill - no go zone! National trust and all
that!!! Come and join us at Kennet Kite Flyers, we work out of the
Newbury show grounds (just off A34) during winter, mail me if you want
further info. A little further afield could be Wroughton Airfield, by
Swindon. It's where White Horse Kite Flyers hold their festival, British
Buggy Club there every time now! disused airstrip, show your BBC card
and they might let you in if there's no event there.
General kiteing? mail me, and I'll feed you my version of local
knoledge! (I live off A420 12 miles west of Oxford, work Eyensham).

Does anyone know of a website that lists the good buggy sites in
Florida? I know of Treasure Island beach, and Crescent beach. Also
southern Wisconsin. Eric

I am afraid there are no beaches in southern Wisconsin. :-) I buggy
mostly in Prairie Du Chien on the island. Nice mowed field by the
marina. Also Crawford fairgrounds. Where in Wisconsin are you? Be neat
to meet another buggier.

Eric, you got any ski's? I picked up some and was on lake Monona
today kite skiing. You should try it. Having a wide open area to play is
awesome. First I used my Force 10 4 meter, and that didn't seem to be
enough power for being on that snow even though there was a good wind.
So I got out my 5.7 meter Sky Tiger, and at times was over powered. I
got to test out my new helmet when I took a spill doing somewhere around
25mph. Helmet saved my brain from being any more scrambled than it
already is. Now, if only that snow wasn't there!

Good luck!

are there any good buggy-spots on the atlantic-coast in france - for
a holiday on summer? We´re coming from germany, so not so far in
the south of france will be better. Do you have any experiences
there an want to tell them?

Hundreds of kilometers highly buggyable !!!
Find under my two best choices, but there is *many* others if you go
more west and more south:
- Fort-Mahon / Quend-Plage, between Authie and Somme rivers/bays
- Barneville / Granville: a classic raid has this name, 100 kms non
stop, very hard to do it in just one tide !) Many good spots all along
this coast. (West Cotentin under Cherbourg)

Anybody know of any good wide open spaces to fly kites in in the LA
area? I'm in the Los Feliz/Glendale area and it seems like every wide
open space is filled with people playing Soccer...
thanks! sean

The beach. I (and several other regulars) fly at Belmont Shore. You
can also fly on most other beaches, tho' Huntington and Seal are pretty
popular.

Just thought it would be nice to find out where all you kiters do
your flying. It would be nice to find new sites to fly when on holiday.
I do most of mine at the beach near St Annes, Blackpool.
Drew

Hye,
I mostly go Buggying on the beach of Ouddorp, Zeeland, the
Netherlands.
Greetings,
Berto.

Down by the lake in St. Cloud, Florida. It's about 20 mins from the
Disney area. Anyone in town look me up,
Steve

In my back yard on 75' lines - just barely fits as long as I don't
move too much ;)
Phil

Mainly Rhyl beach... not bad when the tide is fully out...
Martin

Well, as you know, it's wherever you can.
The local soccer (football) field works pretty well for me. As long
as the wind isn't out of the north :)
It does have the convenience of being close. Within a city block. Put
a few kites in the bag, throw them up. Maybe they are all working for
you today. Or, maybe not.
It's all part of it, isn't it?
Pleasant winds,
Michael

So. California, Capo Beach, Huntington Beach, Salt Creek or the green
space that was just created at the end of the block I live on. 100 Yards
x 300+ yards, top of a hill no obstructions for miles and that would be
the mountains. Can't move them. No play ground equipment, some trees
planted off to the side and I, for the most part, have it to myself!!
You are welcome to come play, but I'm not paying the air fare <G>
Bill

Hello Drew, I also fly at Lytham. Have we met and what do you fly?
I live in the Lake District (UK) Decent flying spots are very hard to
find here. Too many mountains, no good consistent clean wind.
But there are lots of good spots around Morecambe Bay. From Haverigg
in the west to Fleetwood in the south.
I occasionally fly St Annes and Lyme park nr Stockport when visiting
relations there in the Peak District.
Dickie Nourses site has probably the best fly site database for the
UK. Well worth a visit and you can add any good spots of your own.
Sorry but I dont have the url to hand. Search under Poole kite flyers

Hmm... Another Demon Kite Flier!! I wonder for how long ;-)
I fly at Blackheath, (Greenwich) South London not far from that
dateline thingy. (10 minutes walk max. to the observatory)
New Years Day gave us a very light 1 or 2 (sometimes 2 -4) mph breeze
which suited me fine. Others were hoping to get the big kites up that
had not flown over the river the previous evening.
THe team fly anywhere but at Blackheath except on very special
occasions.[1]
Felix

[1] Next weekend, depending on the weather. Next event Madison,
Wisconsin... I won't be there as I will be in Palm Beach FL ;-)
Jebel Ali Sailing Club - Dubai - UAE

I'm in Peoria, Illinois and so far I think I'm the only person around
here into stunt kite flying... I bought an Edge2... promptly broke the
main spar :( I have a parastunter that I have a lot of fun with and a
WindDance 2 that I have for sale... the wind around here is choppy
(turbulent) and collapses the WindDance too much to suit me... for some
reason I have much more fun flying the much cheaper Parastunter. It was
64 degrees F here on 1-2-00, so I went to the large schoolyard that is
on a busy street and flew the parastunter for about 2 1/2 hours... it's
great seeing the people slow down or pull into the parking lot to watch
the kite...
Ralph

Belmont Shore, California, mostly-I've flown some at Huntington
Beach. Yesterday was WINDY-20-40 mph-I had my stack on kevlar lines and
was getting dragged all over the beach-good practice for when I get the
NPW5 built... There were 3 kite surfers out-2 foils and a C. A good
day-though I'm a bit sore today.

On the NorthWest Coast of the Pacific Ocean, here in Ocean Shores,
Washington State. Wonderful winds, yep, why just yesterday we were
practicing team compulsories, 4 of which we've never flown before, and
the winds were hitting 40 to 48 mph with driving hail and sand mixed in.
What a glorious experience.........

Hi Drew
I fly on one of two grassy areas on the seafront in an place called
Goring Gap which is just to the west of Worthing, West Sussex. The
flying fields I use are areas #1 and #3 on Dicky Nourse's flying site
site.
http://freespace.virgin.net/richard.nourse/surveys/sussex/goring.txt
http://freespace.virgin.net/richard.nourse/surveys/sussex/worthing.gif
I use area #1 most often as the wind there is always cleaner than in
areas #2 and #3 and the ground is always drier for some reason, even
after several days of heavy rain.
Regards
James

The best winds so far in my limited kiting.Otherwise Lyme Park or the
Cat and Fiddle,Derbyshire
Now I can remember flying there up on the moor opposite that pub on
new years day a few years ago.
The kite was a new design that year and Flexi had just started
selling them that summer.
What little breeze there was, couldn't shift the low lying mist but
at least it had stopped snowing.
The clatter from the occasional passing gritters as they went by with
their snow ploughs couldn't take away from the almost erie feeling of
strangeness and juxtaposition of being about as far away from a warm sea
breeze as it was possible to get.
It was not my first axle but that was where I finally got them
nailed; deliberate and graceful in that thick, slow air.
I adored that kite;- it was, very aptly, a Stranger.
David Greenhough

If you ever happen to be in Woodbine, Maryland, come on out to my
place. I fly my kites from a small hill on the edge of my hay field.
When I want company there are some good kite folks who gather at
Glenwood middle school a few miles down the road. They have some nice
wide open spaces out there...
I've also been known to pile a few kites in my airplane and fly to
Ocean City, NJ for some quality flying time (of all kinds).
The Washington Monument in DC is another nice place although the
tourist crowds can be excessive at times. There is something about being
tourists which makes people leave their brains at home (I should know
because I've done the same thing)...
And of course, for those of you who really want to get away from it
all: try Cape Lookout, North Carolina (the Core Banks).
Jake Brodsky

Most frequently at Luton Regional Sports Centre and occasionally on
Dunstable Downs (both on Dickys site). When the grass has been cut
back, Sharpenhoe Clappers is also a good site. -- I'm lucky enough to
have a football field open to the northern sky and a park open to the
southern sky a minute's walk from where I live - useful for tests. The
Westwood (actually common grassland) at Beverley is nearby, which is
excellent in all directions, but is plagued with thistles and herds of
cows.
Fraisthorpe near Bridlington has an excellent beach with no cliffs -
and you can join the winds surfers. The only problem on the coast in
summer is the NEly sea breeze making afternoon flying a dazzle.
Robin Hood's Bay has wonderful views but is hopeless for flying: a
very rocky beach and the Yorkshire Moors rising behind. Still, I tried.
Flamborough Head (North Landing) on the clifftop is OK - but don't
step backwards over the cliff edge!
I've had happy times at St Anne's during the festival.
Dave

If your ever in Southern California... Manhattan Beach-near 26th St.,
free parking, lots of space, excellent back drop and views of the homes
on the strand, flyer friendly. Manhattan Beach-north side of the pier
next the volleyball courts, meter parking, lots of space, nice view of
the pier and houses, flyer friendly, good crowds during the weekend.
Redondo Beach-south side of pier, meter parking, bring short lines-50
ft. or shorter, not too much room unless you like flying waist deep in
the ocean. Drop by Rainbow Kites on the pier and say hello to Tom. Flyer
friendly. Friendship Bell, San Pedro-at the end of Gaffey St.open area
in front of Bell next to parking lot, free parking, favorite site of
mine, great view of the ocean and Catalina Island on clear days. Winds
pick up to 20+ mph around 2:00, so bring a kite that can handle it.
Tourists visit this place so be prepared to answer alot of questions.
Winds die down around sunset to near 0 mph. Great sunset views by the
way. Flyer friendly. Belmont Shores-off of Ocean Blvd. 1/2 mile south of
the Belmont Pool. Favorite spot for alot of SCSKL flyers. free parking
but get there early, street parking fills up real fast on the weekends.
Alot of space and the people on the bike path love watching you fly.
Good winds and flyer friendly. Seal Beach-North side of pier, paid and
free parking, I'm kind of partial to this area since this is my home
flying area. Lots of room and great views of the pier and beach houses.
Winds in the morning avg. 0-5 mph and start to pick up around noon to
10-15 mph. Dies down to 0 mph at sunset like most places mentioned
above. Excellent view of sunset. Drop by Up, Up and Away kites on Main
St. and say hello to Monty or go south on Pacific Coast Hiway and see
Steve at Kites Etc.

i went on a 3 week cricket tour to barbados... and flew occasionally
on the hotel beach... called sandy beach... wind was ok when coming from
the sea, but it did get quite busy, and some of the locals werent best
impressed
oh, and there was a real good kitesurfer there too... forgotten his
name though... nice guy

I flew in several places on a recent trip, in San Juan try the old
fort, St Thomas try Blackhook. Seems like the best bets are on the
Atlantic or eastern sides of the Islands.

Avoid American islands...not because of poor wind....rather crime and
lack of safety on remote beaches....Consider ABC's (Aruba Bonaire....)
There are trees there distorted by the dry winds!!!! Safe clean and
joyful spot...

I went to Barbados last Easter. I didn't find the beaches ideal for
kite flying. They were mostly too narrow even for my short lines. Sandy
beach on the south end of the island was pretty good but as Robin points
out, it gets a bit crowded. Not to mention the two dogs (with somewhat
irresponsible owner) that live on the beach and broke my Box of Tricks.
The other reasonable beach was Silver Sands/Silver Rock (not the beach
attached to the Silver Sands hotel), but again, this was a little
narrow. If you want to kite surf, then you should have no problems in
Barbados assuming the wind is up. But be careful of the extremely strong
tides in some places.
Hope that helps
Dave

Hello Chris and everyone
I was sure that someone with more local knowledge would field this
one but as there is no sign of a reply it made sense to pass on my ideas
of where to go. Having been to San Diego twice for the kite trade show
we did most of our flying at the park in Mission Bay, about 1/2 mile
inland from the roller coaster. The park is huge, we either flew on the
grass area nearest to the river and bridge (furthest from the sea) or
the 'beach' next to the lake which is in the same area. The Mission Bay
beach was also a good flying spot. We were told that the locals used
another park the other side of Seaworld but didn't find that one.
As we run a kite shop here in England and were attending a kite trade
show looking for kite stores was not a priority. We did, however, come
across Kite Country at 566 Horton Plaza, I would suggest you check on
it's current status at Gomberg Kite Productions website (sorry, no url)
before going there. At one stage I believe that San Diego boasted four
kite stores but we only found this one. If you haven't visited San Diego
before I would say that Balboa Park and La Jolla (sp?) are the two most
impressive areas for a tourist but the whole place was great and we
can't wait to go back. Enjoy your stay.

Hi Chris, Several of us will be flying there on Saturday. As you
enter town you'll come up on Seaworld Drive. Exit there, turn right,
then right again at the light. Drive along the grassy park there
parallel to the Freeway & look for kites. We'll be there around
10:00 . You can fly elsewhere but that's the best place to start. If you
fly Quadline I'll have some of my Spirits there for you to try out.
See Ya, Steve LaPorte
