Texans celebrate the spring by flying every kind of kite imaginable and we're doing it on Sunday March 6th, 2005 in Austin, Texas. The Zilker Park Kite Festival is a 77 year young event. There is no admission or registration charge. The 2004 festival drew a crowd well over 15,000 - and at least half of them were flying kites. Everyone is welcome whether they fly their kite or just to see the hundreds of kites in the air. We'd like to extend an invitation to all kite fliers to come and experience this lovely heritage event. Bring your kites and show them off. The Austin crowds appreciate great kites. |
Competition is for single line kites but all kites are welcome. Our mission is to encourage creativity, so competition is open to non-manufactured kites only. Competition categories include largest (hint - not that many compete in this event), smallest, highest angle, steadiest, most unusual and strongest pulling. All ages are eligible to compete in categories for youth and adults. See our web page for events and rules. Handsome trophies are awarded to first, second and third place winners. The Oldest and youngest competitors win trophies too.
Sport Kite, buggy, fighter kite and other kite flying demonstrations will be held all day. David and Susan Gomberg are our special guests.
Sunday March 13th, 2005 is set as our rain date.
Contact Eddie Zihlman if you or your team is interested in doing a kite flying demonstration.
The Zilker Park Kite Festival is not only fun, but also a fund raiser to end child abuse. Proceeds from vendor sales go to organizations working to give children safe and happy lives.
Come on down and enjoy "Kite Day" - an event that is uniquely "Austintatious". While you are here, enjoy the SXSW music festival and other spectacular spring happenings in the "Live Music Capital of the World".
