
NAGS HEAD, NC (May 29, 2006) –Kitty Hawk Kites, located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is proud to announce the 24th Annual Rogallo Kite Festival. This event is free and designed for the whole family. The Festival will be held June 10-11, 2006 from 10:00am to 4:00pm between Jockey’s Ridge State Park (the largest living sand dune on the east coast) and the Kitty Hawk Kites store in Jockey’s Ridge Crossing in the town of Nags Head. The Rogallo Festival is two days of kiting fun to honor Francis Rogallo, the NASA scientist and inventor of the flexible wing, as well as a resident of the Outer Banks. His inventions started the sport of hang gliding and his designs have carried over into the stunt kites and kiteboarding kites that are flown today. This event is free and can be enjoyed by the whole family. Attendees can learn to fly a 100’ Octopus, 100’ Manta ray, and 80’ scuba divers.
Spectators of the Kite Festival will see cows fly, lobsters, bears and guitars flutter in the sky and even superman will take to the air. There will be several professional kite flyers present from various kite organizations including: Wings Over Washington organization, and featuring Mike Agner of Wilmington, NC regional director for American Kite Flyer association, and professional kite flyer. Participants will learn to fly stunt kites and power kites. Every hour there will be stunt and power kite demos by internationally known flyers atop the giant dunes of Jockey’s Ridge. The beautiful view of the Atlantic and the Roanoke Sound, from the top of Jockey’s Ridge, is worth the trip alone!
Highlights include: over 30 giant specialty kites, Rogallo wing history exhibits, Wilbear, rockwall climbing, hang gliding simulator, children’s games on the dunes, live radio remote with giveaways all day, professional and amateur kite flyers from around the nation.
