NWSKL’s “Summer Heat,” – Aug 11th and 12th, on the beach (Chance Approach - by the Shilo) in Ocean Shores, WA, it happens every year… The Cutting Edge Kites “Summer Heat” is the last event before the Washington State International Kite Festival (WSIKF) and the first event in the new Comp year in the Northwest Sport Kite League (NWSKL). It’s been going on for half a dozen years now, and it’s a peach of a Competition!
First off, there’s the EVENT itself: A full competition schedule in both dual and multi-line disciplines, including standard Precision and Ballet comps in all classes. Of course there’re also the Team Events too, with the current AKA champions, Team Sixth Sense, sure to be there. And to cap it all off, add in likely Mystery Ballet and Hot Tricks events and there’s truly something for every competitor at “Summer Heat.”
Then there’s the VENUE: Right on the Pacific Ocean shore, with its steady winds... Yes, the wind-speed on the beach varies a bit from year to year depending on what’s been happening out to sea, but the speed fluctuations are miniscule. In short – “Lab-Grade” winds, baby! As good as it gets for sport kite comps!
And if that’s not enough, there’s also the dyed-in-the-wool CAMARADERIE. “Summer Heat” is the last chance all the regional kitefliers have of getting together before WSIKF. And the 1st of August begins a new competition “year” in the Northwest Sport Kite League. This event gathers ‘em in, sets the competition pace, and starts the new competition year’s season rolling.
The schedule of events (tentative) has the folks rolling into town Friday night and usually gathering at The Cutting Edge kite shop. Then a “Pilot’s Meeting” on the beach starts the whole shebang off on Saturday morning at around 9:00 AM, give-or-take, followed by dual-line events by class and discipline. Saturday afternoon sees some demos, the Multi-line events, perhaps a Mystery Ballet, and some Team comps too.
And in the evening, there’s always the possibility of a night fly if there’s enough interest. Sunday completes all the comps, covering any events left over from Saturday, perhaps some demos if time permits, plus the always popular Hot Tricks event. If we’ve done it all right, we’re through in plenty of time for your return-trip to wherever you call home.
By the way – you’re Invited to “Summer Heat!” Yep, we’d dearly love to see you there. Go to the NWSKL website for directions, times, contact info, and any additional “stuff”:
